For me the Dead doesn't start until 1973. However I saw a setlist from 11/3/65 that has Early Morning rain which interests me. Is that the Gordon Lightfoot song or something else

The last year that I saw them,so you could make a point that they ended for me then.At least until 2004 when I found the treasures here. Now I'm convinced they continued on through 1981.

Looks like you have your answer, but does this mean you don't own the Golden Road boxed set with that tune and yet another done by Phil in splendid lead vocal form??

Shame on you Lobster!

And I haven't even begun to prepare my scathing, Troll-esque attack (using a different handle...watch for it!) given your absolutely INDEFENSIBLE comment about somehow the DEAD don't start for you til you are 73...Or that because you were in a coma from 65-73 you rarely listened to music...or some such statement cause clearly there were multiple typos and the statement I THOUGHT I read in your post WASN'T actually there, was it?

Guilty on all charges. Even Cliff's TC selection of a 30 min Dark Star the other did not pique my interest that much. In all honesty I do dabble in 72 somewhat but 1973 is what kicks it off for me.

Understood...but, along the lines of JOTS's comments, 72 seems mighty close. Can you articulate the diff?

Is it the "Wake" material that does it for you?

tell, you are spot on with the "wake" comment. That is what does it for me. A little more jazzy feel.

Yeah, I can see that...it was the big break for me...I always sorta saw 72 as an extension of the 70-71 era (I know, confusing and confounding matters by combining those, esp with all the personnel changes!).

70-71, from a very superficial perspective, was about the re-introduction of the 3-6 min Hunter Americana type tunes, along with Cowboy tunes, and so I always saw some simplistic similarity between the songs on S&Roses and the songs on Euro72, if you follow. Sure, there's Keith, and the loss of Hart/PP/TC, etc., but really, 71-72 have some real ties, whereas the Wake-->Mars, much less BAllah of 75/hiatus fame, takes you even further afield.

So, in that respect, I could see what would sep 73 from 72 for you...my lead guitar playing friend always picked 73 and the Wake material as what he felt was most musically accomplished by the boys, and thus, ID'd that as the defn yr (he and I now debate my era vs his!).

check it out! Lobster is the anti-Tell! The band ends for Tell in 73 ( except for the 1975 shows he was at ) and begins for Lobster in 73

huh? Lobster say it isn't so. I can understand in having a preference other than the early stuff due to some of it's primitive nature ( especially Pigpens keyboard, sorry folks but it can get real annoying imo, surf bands did that sort of thing bettery than early Dead imo ), but you're saying NO 1969? Ok, maybe the repetetive setlists. I'm not a huge 70 fan myself except for the acoustic sets ( sorry Tell ). But when you get to 71 things start getting real thick and tight. And 72? Good lord man! What better tour did they EVER do, or any band ever do, that was better than the majesty of Europe 72? To me that's about as perfect as music can get.

ok end rant. back to work before I get busted : (

Ha! My kind of post...good to see you taking off some time from work, my friend...there have been some damn fine threads of late.

But right now I am basking in the glory of what this be: JOTS taking someone other than me (har) to task for "era bias"!

Go to it Johnny!

[jk of course Lobster!]
